As people reach middle age, after years of hard work, various health issues inevitably arise due to the cumulative effects of daily life. These include lower back pain, herniated discs, eye strain, and varicose veins. Varicose veins can develop in any part of the body where veins are present.
01 Three Common Types of Varicose Veins
1. Varicose Veins in the Legs
People who engage in physical labor, those who sit for long periods in an office setting, teachers, healthcare workers, and others who stand or sit for extended periods are at high risk. Maintaining the same posture for long periods without taking breaks impedes blood return in the lower limbs, gradually leading to varicose veins. Typical early symptoms include soreness, swelling, and a prickling pain in both legs; heaviness and weakness in the lower limbs; difficulty lifting the legs; extreme leg fatigue after work or in the evening; and frequent calf cramps at night.
2. Esophageal and Fundal Varices
These varices are very subtle in the early stages, causing almost no physical discomfort and making them difficult to detect on one’s own. Once the condition worsens, however, it can lead to persistent abdominal distension, generalized weakness, a significant loss of appetite, and recurring dull abdominal pain. This type of vascular issue is often related to hepatic circulation and should not be ignored.
3. Orbital Varicose Veins
Unlike varicose veins in the legs and internal organs, which are more common in middle-aged and elderly people, orbital varicose veins can easily affect young adults in their twenties. Prolonged, intense eye strain, extended screen time, and a lack of eye relaxation or acupressure can trigger intermittent protrusion of the eyeballs. The most obvious risks include persistent vision loss and blurred vision.
02 Varicose Veins Relief and Improvement Plan
(I) Home Remedies for Varicose Veins in the Legs
1. Compression Therapy: Wear medical compression stockings or wrap the affected area with medical compression bandages to use external pressure to guide venous blood back to the heart normally, thereby reducing the burden on the veins;
2. Elevate the Lower Limbs While Resting: When lying flat, prop up your calves and thighs with pillows to use gravity to promote blood circulation in the lower limbs, quickly relieving soreness, swelling, and edema;
3. Gentle Relaxation Massage: Gently massage the affected areas, knees, ankles, and calf muscles to relieve muscle stiffness and improve local circulation;
4. Regular Movement: Avoid sitting or standing still for long periods. Every hour, get up and walk around, perform simple leg lifts and bends, or do light jumps in place to activate the leg muscles, which act as a natural “blood pump.”

(II) Palliative Care for Esophageal and Fundic Varices
1. Warm compress on the abdomen: After bathing, apply a warm towel to the abdomen. The gentle warmth promotes blood circulation in the abdominal cavity and reduces pressure on the blood vessels;
2. Gentle Massage: Gently massage the groin area with both hands to improve blood flow in the vessels connecting the lower limbs to the abdominal cavity;
3. Reminder to Seek Medical Attention: If symptoms such as abdominal distension and fatigue occur frequently, be sure to seek medical attention promptly. Clinically, sclerotherapy can help improve the condition; for severe cases, standardized treatments such as high ligation of the greater and lesser saphenous veins or varicose vein stripping surgery may be performed.
(III) Eye Care and Relief Techniques for Orbital Varicose Veins
1. Circular scraping to relax the eye area: Place the thumbs of both hands against the temples, and use the pads of the index fingers to gently scrape along the upper and lower eye sockets to relieve tension in the blood vessels around the eyes;
2. Acupoint massage: Regularly massage key acupoints around the eyes, such as Jingming and Sibai, to relieve eye redness, soreness, swelling, and protrusion.
Moderate exercise and regular relaxation not only help improve blood flow throughout the body and alleviate physical strain caused by prolonged sitting or standing, but also relieve mental and physical stress, helping you maintain a relaxed and cheerful state of mind—all while protecting your health in middle age at minimal cost.
