A balanced diet can meet the nutritional needs of both mother and baby. Some pregnant women experience severe morning sickness, and due to seasonal variations in food availability and limited dietary diversity, it may be difficult to meet vitamin requirements solely through diet. Today, we’ll discuss common minor health concerns during pregnancy and key considerations for vitamin supplementation.

01 Please note the stages of pregnancy

1. Early Pregnancy

When experiencing severe morning sickness, pregnant women may lose their appetite, suffer nausea during meals, and vomit repeatedly—sometimes bile-stained. This period coincides with the critical development and formation of the fetus’s major organs, particularly the neural tube and vital organs, which rely heavily on vitamins and minerals. Expectant mothers should draw on their sense of maternal responsibility and joy to promote psychological and physiological harmony, avoiding the influence of outdated notions like “pregnancy suppresses appetite,” which can exacerbate morning sickness. Opt for fresh, nutritious foods supplemented with nutrients recommended by nutritionists or physicians. Begin nutritional supplementation during the preconception period.

2. Second Trimester

Morning sickness symptoms subside and appetite improves, allowing for positive nutritional supplementation for both mother and baby. During this phase, the fetus grows rapidly, increasing the mother’s need for nourishment. Pregnant women should adopt dietary supplementation to ensure adequate vitamin and trace mineral intake.

3. Late Pregnancy

The enlarged uterus compresses the gastrointestinal tract, causing discomfort for the expectant mother. It is advisable to eat smaller, more frequent meals, opting for foods that are compact yet nutritionally dense. Therefore, pregnant women should consume foods like papaya, pumpkin, meat and eggs, carrots, dark leafy greens, and mangoes to supplement vitamin A, ensuring the healthy development of the fetus’s gastrointestinal tract, skin, and lungs.

Calcium and vitamin D promote the development of the fetus’s teeth and bones. During mid-pregnancy, the fetus’s teeth and bones undergo rapid growth, leading to a sharp increase in calcium requirements. Pregnant women in their second trimester can take calcium supplements or increase intake of calcium-rich foods like tofu, dried cheese, shrimp, fish, kelp, eggs, duck eggs, milk, yogurt, or special pregnancy milk powder. The femur, commonly known as the thigh bone, is a long and fragile bone that is highly susceptible to fractures. So, specifically, what are the causes that can lead to a femoral shaft fracture?

01 What types of injuries can cause femoral shaft fractures?

Direct external forces primarily refer to impacts, blows, and similar actions. Examples include car collisions, assaults, being struck by heavy objects, or weapon injuries. These constitute direct external forces that carry a high probability of causing fractures in the shaft of the femur. Fractures resulting from such causes are often comminuted fractures, butterfly fractures, or transverse fractures, with significant displacement. Visually, this can create the appearance of a shortened leg. Additionally, such incidents cause severe damage to the soft tissues surrounding the femoral shaft.

Indirect forces primarily involve falls, machinery injuries, lever actions, or violent twisting. Examples include falling from heights, legs caught in rotating machinery, or forceful twisting. Fractures of this nature commonly occur in children and factory workers. They are often comminuted fractures, which are difficult to repair.

 

Elderly individuals have porous bones that are less robust; even minor external forces can cause fractures. Furthermore, the development of a tumor in the femoral shaft can alter its properties, increasing fragility and leading to fractures under external stress. Sometimes, even a simple fall on level ground can result in an accident.

02 How to Determine if a Femoral Shaft Fracture Has Occurred

Pain is the primary symptom of a femoral shaft fracture. Other manifestations include swelling, bruising, difficulty walking, and visible deformity. In severe cases, excessive blood loss may occur, potentially leading to shock.

03How to Exercise at Home

 

Action 1: Ball-Squeeze Isometric Contraction

Key Points: Lie flat on your back with your upper body pressed firmly against the bed. Place your arms alongside your body. Bend your knees and squeeze a ball between them, maintaining tension throughout. Breathe evenly. An inflatable ball is ideal, as its elasticity provides noticeable resistance when squeezing. If unavailable, a pillow may substitute, though it offers less pronounced resistance and is less effective than a ball. Repeat this exercise in 2 sets, holding each for 15 seconds.

Exercise 2: Active Hip External Rotation

Key Points: Sit upright with your upper body straight and arms relaxed at your sides. Keep the unaffected leg stationary. Rotate the affected leg outward, then inward within your comfortable range of motion while maintaining natural breathing. Repeat this movement in 2 sets of 8 repetitions each.

Exercise 3: 45-Degree Straight Leg Raise

Key Points: Lie supine with the upper body upright and arms at your sides, palms down. Keep the unaffected leg stationary while raising the affected leg to a 45-degree angle, then lower it. Avoid exceeding 45 degrees. Point your toes upward and engage your calf muscles. Repeat this exercise in 2 sets of 8 repetitions each.

Regularly performing these three exercises enhances pelvic and lower-limb movement control while strengthening core stability. Remember to perform them 40 minutes after meals, 2 to 3 times daily.

During post-recovery rehabilitation, schedule regular follow-up appointments to adjust training methods based on your condition. Tailoring exercises to different recovery stages ensures optimal rehabilitation outcomes.

Many expectant mothers may experience these concerns. After the morning sickness phase of pregnancy, they often find their appetite significantly increases, leading to an irresistible urge to eat while worrying about uncontrolled weight gain causing the baby to grow too large. This is generally normal. After becoming pregnant, total food intake typically increases by 10% to 15% compared to pre-pregnancy levels.

01 Why Pregnant Women Feel Hungry Easily

1. Increased Energy Requirements

After conception, a pregnant woman’s energy needs increase. During early pregnancy when the fetus is small, the additional energy required is minimal. Combined with morning sickness affecting appetite, hunger may not be strongly felt. However, by mid-pregnancy, as morning sickness subsides and the fetus grows rapidly, energy demands surge dramatically. At this stage, expectant mothers often experience heightened hunger.

 

2. Changes in Progesterone Levels

After conception, elevated progesterone levels stimulate appetite. Women with mild morning sickness may experience increased hunger and appetite as early as the first trimester.

 

3. Altered Appetite Signals

Our hunger is regulated by signals (neuropeptides) secreted by the nervous system and digestive tract. Some signals stimulate appetite, while others suppress it. Normally, these signals maintain a dynamic balance aligned with our eating patterns. During pregnancy, this balance shifts, with appetite-stimulating signals becoming dominant. As a result, expectant mothers tend to feel hungrier than usual.

 

02 How to Ease Hunger

1. Eat smaller meals more frequently

If three meals a day are insufficient for expectant mothers, consider dividing them into six smaller meals. Add morning and afternoon snacks along with an evening light bite, timing them flexibly based on when hunger strikes. At the same time, control portion sizes at each meal. Aim for 1600-1800 calories per day during early pregnancy and 1800-2200 calories per day during mid-to-late pregnancy. Just make sure your total daily calorie intake doesn’t exceed these values.

2. Balanced Diet

Aim for a macronutrient ratio of approximately 50% carbohydrates, 20% protein, and 30% fat in your diet. Increase intake of vegetables and fiber-rich foods like whole grains and broccoli, as they provide greater satiety and delay hunger. Limit junk foods like fried items and sweets. If cravings arise, allow yourself one serving per week without overindulging.

 

3. Moderate Exercise

Moderate exercise helps burn excess calories while improving physical fitness. Studies show that 30 minutes of light physical activity—like a post-meal walk—can actually reduce hunger pangs while lowering risks of gestational diabetes and excessive weight gain. Pregnant women with diabetes should strictly follow their doctor’s guidance for diet and exercise.

Seek Medical Attention Promptly If You Experience:

While heightened hunger and appetite are common during pregnancy, seek medical advice if accompanied by these abnormal symptoms:

 

1. Palpitations, emotional agitation, heat intolerance with excessive sweating, or weight loss. Blood tests for thyroid function may be needed to rule out hyperthyroidism.

 

2. If you experience increased appetite, excessive thirst, frequent urination, yet weight loss, blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin tests are needed to rule out diabetes.

 

Pregnancy is truly a challenging journey for expectant mothers. They must balance providing sufficient energy for the baby’s healthy growth without excessive intake that could lead to fetal obesity, all while enduring various discomforts of pregnancy. Every mother is truly remarkable!

An increasing number of young women are flocking to cities, relying on cities, and building cities. Under immense pressure, what changes are occurring in the bodies of this vast group? How can they adapt to these changes to balance their nutritional needs? These are questions worthy of consideration by young women.

01 The Nutritional Challenges Facing Young Women

After turning 25 and into their 30s, women experience a decline in muscle mass and a gradual slowing of their metabolic rate. While you may not consume as much food as during adolescence, your digestive system tends to process meals more efficiently and thoroughly compared to your 20s and early 30s. Consequently, young women who eat without restraint often find their weight spiraling out of control if they’re not careful.

 

Many women pursuing independence during this phase are in the fast lane of their careers, where high-pressure, fast-paced routines are the norm. Meals often consist of convenience foods, fast food, or takeout, and skipping meals or being too busy to eat is common. Under these conditions, the body’s essential nutrients simply cannot keep pace with its demands.

 

Additionally, most women at this stage plan to conceive. However, inadequate daily nutrition and the loss of trace elements can lead to premature aging symptoms: appearing thin or bloated, slouching with rounded shoulders, dry skin with deep expression lines beyond one’s years, and a pale complexion. This poor physical condition also makes the body unsuitable for carrying a life.

02 Dietary Approaches to Addressing the Midlife Crisis

A woman’s total daily calorie intake should be approximately 1,800 to 2,200 calories. Her dietary pattern should emphasize low sugar, low salt, less oil, more whole grains, sufficient high-quality protein, and a preference for plant oils over animal fats.

 

Many young women fail to meet their nutritional requirements, particularly for iron, calcium, and folate. Iron deficiency can lead to anemia; calcium deficiency accelerates bone loss and reduces bone density; and folate deficiency impairs digestive function.

 

Young women can address these deficiencies by adjusting their diets. Foods rich in folate include animal liver, soy products, fresh green leafy vegetables, and red meats like pork, beef, and lamb—which also provide iron. Aim for at least 100 grams of meat daily. Vegetarians can obtain folate from leafy greens and whole grains.

 

Women in this stage, particularly those aged 30-40, should prioritize anti-aging measures. Consuming antioxidant-rich foods like berries, salmon, cauliflower, grapes, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and oats boosts immunity, reduces infections, and lowers risks of Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, cancer, and cataracts. These foods also offer beauty benefits, slowing the aging process and maintaining skin elasticity.

For young working women, prolonged sitting, irregular schedules, and poor dietary habits are primary causes of intestinal disorders and dysbiosis. Daily meals should emphasize fiber-rich whole grains, legumes, and fruits/vegetables to increase beneficial gut bacteria, thereby suppressing harmful strains and improving digestive health.
