The Difference Between Humerus Shaft Fractures and Other Injuries, and How to Treat Them Postoperatively

The humeral shaft refers to the upper arm; more specifically, it extends from 1 to 2 centimeters below the shoulder joint down to 2 centimeters above the elbow joint. The section in between is called the humeral shaft.
It is the part of the arm that generates force from the shoulder. Due to its unique anatomy, improper exercise or accidents in daily life can lead to fractures in this area. So, what are the typical symptoms if a fracture occurs here?
01 Symptoms of Humerus Shaft Fractures
1. Significant Pain
Pain is the primary symptom of a humeral shaft fracture. Not only is there significant pain when pressure is applied, but in more severe cases, the pain can be intense—even unbearable—even when the limb is at rest. In particular, the pain intensifies when the limb is pulled forcefully or when an attempt is made to realign the fracture.
2. Localized Swelling
If a person has a humeral shaft fracture, the affected area will swell rapidly due to bleeding. If there is no external skin injury, the blood cannot escape and may become trapped within the soft tissues, causing swelling.
Another possible cause is that blood vessels rupture after the fracture, obstructing venous return and leading to swelling. In addition, some individuals may also exhibit signs of bruising.
3. Deformity
In severe cases, a fracture may result in deformity of the upper arm. For example, shortening of the upper arm, localized bony protrusions, or depressions—all of which are caused by displacement of the broken bone fragments.
4. Crepitus
After a fracture, even simple movements may produce a grating sound. This is caused by the friction between the broken bone fragments as they move against each other.
02: Distinguishing Humerus Shaft Fractures from Other Conditions
Fractures of the humeral shaft are similar to fractures in other locations, such as proximal humeral fractures and supracondylar humeral fractures, but there are some subtle differences:
For example, proximal humerus fractures primarily occur in middle-aged and elderly individuals, as this demographic is more prone to osteoporosis and thus more susceptible to injury. In contrast, humeral shaft fractures can occur in people of all ages. Additionally, proximal humerus fractures primarily occur in the upper arm near the shoulder joint, which is a distinct difference from humeral shaft fractures.
Supracondylar humeral fractures, on the other hand, primarily occur at the elbow, which is a distinct difference from humeral shaft fractures. Furthermore, supracondylar humeral fractures are generally associated with a history of injury to that specific area, and the affected part of the elbow typically protrudes backward, making it very noticeable.
03 Postoperative Recovery Exercises
Exercise 1: Seated Resistance Band Rowing
Key Points: Perform this exercise in a seated position with your upper body upright. Secure one end of the resistance band at a fixed point at the same height as your seated position. Hold one end of the band in each hand. As you exhale, pull the band backward; as you inhale, return to the starting position. Repeat the exercise. Continue for about 30 seconds. Perform 3 sets of this exercise, with 10 repetitions per set.
Exercise 2: Forward Push
Key Points: Perform this exercise while standing, facing a wall at a distance of about two fists. Raise the affected arm with the palm facing outward, keeping it at shoulder height. Then place your palm against the wall and push forward with gentle force—avoid using excessive force, as this may cause secondary injury to the arm.
It’s okay if you feel mild discomfort, but if the pain is severe, stop immediately and consider whether you’re applying too much force; if so, reduce the intensity. This exercise should last about 20 seconds. Repeat this exercise, performing 2 sets each time, with 10 repetitions per set.

Both of these exercises are designed to aid in post-surgery recovery and are highly effective at improving upper limb joint stability and muscle strength.
