Pull-ups are an exercise that places significant demands on upper body and arm strength and requires a burst of power in an instant. If you don’t warm up properly before exercising, you’re at high risk of sustaining muscle injuries during the workout. Therefore, before performing pull-ups, you should warm up to loosen and mobilize your muscles and joints. This also helps activate your entire musculature, putting you in better physical condition during the workout and enabling you to achieve better results on the test. Now, let’s take a look at some common warm-up methods.

01 Chest Expansion Exercise
Hold your arms out straight in front of you with your elbows bent and forearms pointing backward. Make fists with both hands and place them in front of your chest. Using your shoulder joints as pivots, swing your arms back and forth as far as possible to both sides. Then return to the starting position with your arms held out straight in front of you, palms facing each other. Using your shoulder joints as pivots, keep your arms straight and swing them horizontally back and forth to both sides. This exercise helps relax the shoulder joints and muscles. Perform 10 repetitions per set.
02 Abdominal and Back Exercises
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your body upright. Interlace your fingers with your palms facing the floor. Bend forward at the waist, using your arms to lower your upper body, and try to touch the floor with your palms. Do 10 repetitions per set.
03 Shoulder Circles
How can you effectively increase your range of motion in the shoulder joints? Performing shoulder circles is an effective way to achieve this. To do this exercise, you’ll need a small prop—a towel. Stand with your legs apart and your body straight. Hold both ends of the towel with each hand, and using your shoulder joints as the axis, move your arms in a circular motion straight in front of and behind your body. Perform 10 repetitions per set.
04 Arm Rotations
To fully lubricate and relax our shoulder joints, we can also do an arm rotation warm-up. Stand with your legs apart and keep your body straight. Raise both arms out to the sides until they are level with your shoulders, then bend your elbows to form a 90-degree angle with your shoulders. Using your shoulders as the axis, rotate both arms in a semicircle—it looks just like the “Maneki-neko” (lucky cat) gesture.
05 Cross-Support
Pull-ups engage the most muscle groups—primarily the arm muscles and the shoulder and back muscles. The cross-support exercise effectively activates the shoulder and back muscles. Lie face down on the floor with your elbows on the ground, your arms at a 90-degree angle to your body, your body straight, and your toes touching the floor. Hold this position for 20 seconds. Then straighten your arms so your palms touch the floor, keeping the rest of your body in the same position, and hold for 20 seconds.
Next, spread your arms outward so they form a figure-eight shape. This is the most challenging variation, providing a significant workout for your arm and shoulder-back muscles; hold for 20 seconds. When performing the cross-support, you must engage your entire body’s muscle strength—don’t just go through the motions, or you won’t achieve the best warm-up results.
Of course, in addition to the exercises mentioned above, you can also incorporate some side stretches and jumping warm-up exercises. Taking a little time before each workout to thoroughly perform these six warm-up exercises will give you a significant boost during your main training session, allowing you to perform with ease and confidence. Not only will this help prevent injuries, but it will also fully energize your body, helping you achieve better results!
